More about this artwork

Henri Edmond Cross's painting "Beach Scene With Two Trees" is a vivid example of neo-Impressionist style, expressing a vibrant, light-infused landscape. The setting is a beach bathed in a rich tapestry of colors, from the azure blue of the ocean to the sandy tones of the shore, intermingled with the warm hues of leisurely beachgoers.Central to the scene are two distinctly painted trees that give the painting its title. The trees, luxuriant with lush green foliage, stand upright and provide a stark contrast to the horizontal sweep of the sea and sky in the background. These arboreal figures also contribute to a sense of depth and structure in the composition.Beneath the trees, various figures are depicted enjoying the beach setting. The brushwork here is loose, with abstract representations of people rendered in broad, colorful strokes. These figures vary in dress and posture, subtly capturing the casual, relaxed atmosphere typical of a beach scene.Overall, Cross's painting is a charming portrayal of leisure and nature, utilizing dynamic colors and textures to recreate the shimmer and warmth of a beach environment. His approach is characteristic of the Pointillism technique, with an emphasis on the interplay of color and light, achieving a luminous effect on the overall composition.

Henri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910) was a French artist known for his Pointillism paintings of landscapes and still life. He co-founded Société des Artistes Indépendants in Paris, where he met and was inspired by the Neo-impressionist painter Seurat. Due to rheumatism, Cross moved to the south of France, where Signac was also based. Together they abandoned the tiny colored dots of Pointillism for orderly brushstrokes in the style of mosaic. This was second generation Neo-Impressionism, and laid a path for Fauvism.
