More about this artwork

This image represents "Calanque des Antibois" by Henri Edmond Cross, a notable painting that embodies the characteristics of the Pointillist style. The painting captures the scenic beauty of a rocky Mediterranean coastline, likely inspired by the picturesque environments of southern France. In the composition, we observe a tranquil view overlooking a serene blue sea, bounded by a rugged coastline that is depicted with various shades of ochre and blue. The artist uses distinct dots of color, a hallmark of Pointillism, which blend together from a distance to create vibrant, luminous scenes. This technique also adds a meticulous texture to the whole scene, giving it both depth and vitality.Dominating the foreground is a scene of coastal rocks leading towards a small boat near the shore, suggesting the human element interacting with this natural beauty. A building, possibly a boathouse or storage shed, sits atop the rocks, subtly integrated into the landscape. The roof of the building, rendered in a salmon pink contrasting with the muffled blues of the sea and sky, draws the viewer's eye and offers a visual anchor within the expanse of blue. The backdrop features distant, misty mountains that fade into the sky, enhancing the sense of depth and vastness in the painting. The peacefulness of the scene is palpable, conveying a timeless connection between land, sea, and sky.

Henri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910) was a French artist known for his Pointillism paintings of landscapes and still life. He co-founded Société des Artistes Indépendants in Paris, where he met and was inspired by the Neo-impressionist painter Seurat. Due to rheumatism, Cross moved to the south of France, where Signac was also based. Together they abandoned the tiny colored dots of Pointillism for orderly brushstrokes in the style of mosaic. This was second generation Neo-Impressionism, and laid a path for Fauvism.
