More about this artwork

"View of the Seine, Samois" by Paul Signac is a vibrant and picturesque representation of a calm riverside scene captured with the technique typical of Pointillism, a method championed by Signac where small distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image. This painting showcases a serene vista along the River Seine in Samois, a small commune in the Île-de-France region of France. In this artwork, we can see a tranquil water body in the foreground, with reflections that mirror the sky and the elements along the riverbank. The use of blues and purples in the water suggests the time of day might be either early morning or late afternoon, with the gentle movement of the river subtly animated by Signac’s brushstrokes. The middle ground is dominated by a yellow house with a steep, brown roof, which appears cozy and inviting amidst the more neutral tones of its surroundings. Trees line both sides of the riverbank, painted with a rich palette of greens, yellows, and blues, enhancing the picture’s depth and inviting the viewer’s eye to wander leisurely across the canvas. The sky, depicted with strokes of purple, white, and green, adds a dreamy quality to the scene, emphasizing the overall tranquility.

Paul Signac (1863-1935) was a French Neo-Impressionist painter. Together with Georges Seurat, Signac developed the Pointillism style. He was a passionate sailor, bringing back watercolor sketches of ports and nature from his travels, then turning them into large studio canvases with mosaic-like squares of color. He abandoned the short brushstrokes and intuitive dabs of color of the impressionists for a more exact scientific approach to applying dots with the intention to combine and blend not on the canvas, but in the viewer's eye.
