More about this artwork

The artwork captures a female nude rendered in a reclining pose, viewed from above. Her arms are stretched back above her head, intersecting and partially obscuring her face. A sense of movement and flexibility is conveyed by the positioning of her limbs and the twist of her torso. The figure's body is portrayed with stark lines and minimal color, focusing more on the contours and the form than on detailed realism. Schiele’s signature expressive, almost raw line work is evident, emphasizing the body's anatomy with dark outlines and shading.Key areas on the figure, such as the elbows, knees, and face are highlighted with a darker tone, adding depth and a rough texture to the illustration. The background remains largely plain, directing the focus squarely on the dynamically posed figure. A distinguishing feature is the treatment of the pubic area, marked with a bold patch of dark color which starkly contrasts with the otherwise subdued palette of the rest of the body. Schiele's typical attention to emotional expression and the human form challenges traditional norms, inviting a more introspective examination of the subject.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
