More about this artwork

This striking artwork is a woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni, depicting the Kabuki actor Ōtani Tomoemon in the role of Ono Sadakurō. The painting is filled with dynamic tension and dramatic expression, typical of Kabuki theater's bold and exaggerated style. In the image, the character Ono Sadakurō is captured in a moment of intense action. He wears a traditional costume that is simplistic yet functional, appropriate for the character's aggressive nature. A significant part of his outfit is a large, straw hat that adds a dramatic flair and serves to frame his face, which is marked by a stern, focused expression. His body language, with one arm pulling the straw cape tightly around him and the other gripping a sword at his side, indicates readiness and aggression. These elements suggest a scene of confrontation or challenge, reflecting the dramatic conflicts typical in Kabuki plays. The background is minimal, featuring only streaks of rain, which add to the atmosphere of tension and urgency.Through this portrayal, Toyokuni effectively conveys the theatricality and emotion of Kabuki, allowing the audience to almost feel the drama and intensity that a live theater audience would experience.

Utagawa Toyokuni (1769-1825) was a prominent Japanese woodblock printmaker and painter of the Edo period. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), he was the chief disciple of Utagawa Toyoharu, a well-respected printmaker. He specialized in kabuki theater prints, which depicted famous actors in performances and featured dramatic scenes from plays. In addition to kabuki theater prints, Toyokuni also produced portraits of geishas, landscapes, and scenes from everyday life. He eventually became a leading master of the Utagawa School.
