More about this artwork

The painting depicts a serene maritime scene where several boats are gently floating on calm waters. In the foreground, a large sailboat with two masts is the focus, with its sails partially unfurled and hanging lax, suggesting a lack of wind. A small rowboat is attached to its side, and people can be seen sitting in both boats, possibly in conversation or resting. In the background, two other larger ships with masts appear more distant, set against a soft, cloudy sky which occupies the top portion of the canvas. The sky is lightly brushed with hues of light gray and white, hinting at a cloudy day. The reflection of the boats and their masts shimmers on the water's surface, enhancing the overall tranquility of the scene. The light and shading suggest it might be early morning or late afternoon, a time when the sea is often at its calmest.
