The painting depicts a lush and detailed arrangement of fruits and flowers. A variety of grapes, with plump bunches of both a dark blue and a vibrant green, sit prominently at the sides of the composition. Intertwined with these are ripe, mellow pears, their surfaces textured and shaded with hints of yellow, brown, and red, indicating the softness of their ripened state. Sprinkled throughout are smaller clusters of red currants, adding a dash of vibrant color contrast. Floral elements include delicate white blossoms with yellow centers, rich blue flowers that draw the eye, and a variety of green leaves and stems that add depth and texture to the arrangement. These botanical components seem to softly overflow from a neutral-toned surface, perhaps a stone ledge, which subtly supports the bounteous display.

Jean Bernard (1775–1833) was an avid Dutch art collector and a painter. His portraits of people, nature, and animals were drawn mostly with charcoal and colored crayons which beautifully captured the intricate details of his varied subjects. 

He was a successful artist during his lifetime with many of his works decorating ministries and famous people's homes.
