In the artwork, a bucolic farm scene unfolds under a muted sky. At the center, a woman is engaged in milking a cow, her posture bent to the task. Surrounding her are various farm animals: several cows stand and recline throughout the space, while a cluster of pigs, rendered in a smattering of expressive lines, lounges in the foreground. To the left, thin, leafless trees rise into the sky, suggesting a bare, perhaps autumnal season. The background is marked by a rustic farmhouse with a thatched roof and a prominent chimney, hinting at life continuing beyond the immediate view. Nearby, another structure with visible fencing adds to the rural setting.

Jean Bernard (1775–1833) was an avid Dutch art collector and a painter. His portraits of people, nature, and animals were drawn mostly with charcoal and colored crayons which beautifully captured the intricate details of his varied subjects. 

He was a successful artist during his lifetime with many of his works decorating ministries and famous people's homes.
