More about this artwork

The painting titled "On Both Sides" by Kęstutis Jauniškis presents a serene and somewhat abstract landscape. A soft, muted palette of earthy browns, blues, and subtle hints of warm colors creates a tranquil and somewhat ethereal atmosphere. Central to the composition are several delicate, bare trees that appear almost as fragile silhouettes against the broader strokes of color representing the land and sky.The landscape is divided by a sinuous path or river, meandering through the scene and flanked by these slender trees. This natural or man-made divide adds a sense of depth and perspective, guiding the viewer's eye through the varied textures and tones of the terrain. The inclusion of small, nondescript objects or stones along the path provides subtle focal points and enhances the overall sense of peace and stillness within the painting. The artist’s use of soft, blending colors suggests different times of day or seasons, perhaps reflecting on the constant changes in nature and environment. The artwork invites contemplation, urging the viewer to consider the beauty and quietude found in simple, natural scenes. The title "On Both Sides" may allude to the visual division of the landscape or to thematic contrasts such as solitude versus community, nature versus human-made elements, or the past intersecting with the present.

Kęstutis Jauniškis was born in Lithuania in 1961. He studied economy at Vilnius University and graduated in 1985 with a degree in MA. While studying economy, the artist also attended the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts and graduated in 1986. As an artist, Kestutis Jauniskis is interested in architectural forms and colour, and their relationship with their surroundings. In his paintings, reality is sometimes mixed with fantasy, which infuses a poetic touch into this rational world. It is in these scenes that Kestutis Jauniskis finds the shapes, colours, light and sky that evoke an emotional response in him, making him want to record them. The abstraction of his painting best represents the depth of feeling he has when viewing this real world that surrounds us, finding beauty in what others may consider ugly or mundane. At the same time, the artist likes to experiment with new abstract forms and objects. His work has been exhibited in Finland and Lithuania. He has participated in a group exhibition titled 'The Modern Lithuanian Art' at the Museum of Modern Art in Valencia, Spain.
