Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865–1931) was a distinguished Finnish painter, graphic artist, designer, and architect. Regarded as one of Finland’s most eminent artists, he significantly influenced the formation of Finnish national identity through his art.

Gallen-Kallela is most famous for his illustrations of the Finnish national epic, the "Kalevala." Drawing inspiration from Finnish folklore, mythology, and the country’s natural environment, he brought the stories of the epic to life and made them accessible and compelling to a wide audience.

An important figure in both the Art Nouveau movement and Symbolism across Europe, Gallen-Kallela’s style merged traditional Finnish elements with innovative artistic approaches. His artistic abilities were wide-ranging, encompassing not only painting but also graphics, furniture design, and architecture.

Over the course of his career, Gallen-Kallela played a vital part in the evolution of modern art in Finland. His legacy endures both nationally and abroad, with numerous works preserved in prominent institutions such as the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki.
