Ernst Stern (1 April 1876 – 28 August 1954) was a Romanian-German scenic designer, celebrated for his profound influence on early 20th-century stagecraft. Although born in Romania, Stern built his career in Germany, where his creative insights left a lasting mark on both stage and film design during a time of artistic innovation.

Stern became a central figure in the rise of expressionism, a movement dedicated to articulating emotion and symbolism through vivid color palettes, abstract forms, and striking contrasts. His stage designs, noted for their unique and evocative visual elements, added remarkable depth and complexity to the theater.

Throughout his professional life, Ernst Stern collaborated with many of the era’s foremost German directors. His artistic input helped define the visual direction of several landmark plays and early cinematic works, reinforcing the central role of design in storytelling and audience immersion.

Today, Stern is regarded as a driving force in the evolution of both expressionist theatre and film. His pioneering methods in set and stage design established enduring benchmarks in the arts, securing his reputation as one of the leading scenic designers of his time.
