More about this artwork

Welcome to a delightful exploration of Herbert Crowley’s circa 1910 painting titled "Cabbages," a unique piece from his 'Wiggle Much' series. This whimsical artwork invites viewers into a surreal, almost storybook landscape teeming with creativity and charming peculiarities. At the heart of the scene is an unusually large cabbage, ingeniously encapsulated within a delicate, spherical wire frame. This fantastical vegetable dominates the center of the composition, illustrating Crowley’s fascination with blending natural elements with imaginative structures. Surrounding the colossal cabbage are various figures engaged in different activities, adding layers of narrative to the scene. To the left, a curious creature reminiscent of a giant rabbit, equipped with backpack-like attachments, seems to be interacting or assisting in the gardening tasks. This character adds a sense of playfulness and fantasy, consistent with Crowley’s known affection for injecting the mystic and mythical into everyday settings. The backdrop features quaint cottages with thatched roofs, and further enriching the scene are several figures, including adults and children in vibrant, almost ceremonial attire. These figures are shown interacting with smaller cabbages, which they hold and examine with care, suggesting a communal or celebratory event centered around harvest or gardening. The color palette of soft pastels enhances the dreamlike quality of the painting, inviting the viewer to a world where the boundary between the real and the imaginary pleasantly blurs. The detailed linework and gentle shading techniques used by Crowley help create a texture that is both tactile and visually engaging, making "Cabbages" not just a painting, but a portal to a whimsically augmented reality."Cabbages" by Herbert Crowley is a testament to the artist’s visionary approach to art, inviting us to marvel at the ordinary turned extraordinary through the lens of imagination and creativity.

Herbert E. Crowley (1873–1937) was a British artist whose remarkable vision and varied talents made a lasting impact on early 20th-century art. In addition to painting, he worked as a set designer and was among the trailblazers of comic strip illustration. Crowley’s creative endeavors crossed multiple artistic boundaries, embodying the era’s spirit of innovation. Characterized by its symbolic depth and dreamlike qualities, his unique style stood out in the art world.

Among Crowley’s significant accomplishments was the development of The Wigglemuch, a symbolic comic strip published in the New York Herald. Running for 13 episodes between March and June of 1910, The Wigglemuch captured attention with its originality and unorthodox storytelling, marking Crowley as a visionary in the realm of early comics. Today, the series is recognized as a compelling piece of comic history.

Crowley’s artistic activity extended beyond illustration and comics into the sphere of fine art. He was a participant in the influential 1913 Armory Show, which brought the avant-garde movements transforming European art to American audiences for the first time. Being included in this exhibition aligned Crowley with a notable group of artists who deeply shaped the development of modern art.

Though Herbert Crowley’s contributions were overlooked for a period, renewed attention has underscored his significance as both an innovator and a connector across artistic disciplines. His integration of symbolic storytelling, imaginative design, and theatrical flair remains a subject of study and admiration among art historians and enthusiasts alike today.
