More about this artwork

" (1921) by Konstantin Alexeevich Korovin transports us to a vibrant market day in a bustling Siberian village. A central aspect of the painting is the visual cacophony of colors and forms, showcasing Korovin's mastery over impressionistic techniques. In this dynamic scene, local villagers, dressed in traditional attire, engage enthusiastically with visiting performers and their bears—a popular form of entertainment in rural Russia during this period. The bears, a focal point of the composition, seem almost tame, performing for a crowd that gathers around in fascination. The bustling activity is set against a background of quaint wooden houses and a distant church, painted in bright, almost fairy-tale hues. Korovin's use of swift brushstrokes captures the lively motion and festive atmosphere of the gathering, making the scene pulse with energy. This painting not only reflects the cultural uniqueness of Siberian village life but also demonstrates Korovin's brilliant use of color and light to convey a sense of immediacy and joy.

Konstantin Alexeevich Korovin was a distinguished Russian Impressionist painter, renowned for his bold use of color and atmospheric compositions. Born in Moscow on December 5, 1861, Korovin emerged as a central figure in Russian Impressionism, leaving a lasting impact on his peers and succeeding generations of artists.

Although Korovin’s family was officially recorded as “peasants of Vladimir Gubernia,” he grew up in a cultured household. His father, Aleksey Mikhailovich Korovin, was a university graduate with a profound love for the arts and music. This environment strongly influenced Konstantin’s artistic ambitions, even though the family came from a mercantile background.

Korovin received his education at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he was guided by notable figures like Vasily Perov and Alexei Savrasov. Blending traditional Russian motifs with impressionist methods, he created acclaimed works that express the spirit of Russian nature, dynamic city views, and imaginative theater set designs.

Over the course of his career, Korovin made substantial contributions to Russian stage design and maintained close ties with the prominent Abramtsevo circle of artists. Masterpieces such as “Paris at Night” and “Northern Idyll” are still celebrated for their luminous quality, expressive brushstrokes, and vivid narrative elements.
