More about this artwork

In the evocative watercolor painting "Glasfabrik beim Kalvarienberg" by Anny Dollschein, composed after 1938, viewers are presented with a serene yet subtly industrious landscape. Dollschein employs a vibrant, fluid watercolor technique to craft a scene that merges natural beauty with human endeavor. The artwork features a collection of rustic buildings, possibly part of a small village, with the central focus being a glass factory, as indicated by the title. The factory itself does not dominate the scene but is instead harmoniously integrated into the rural setting. Muted reds and browns of rooftops contrast softly against the lush greens of the surrounding countryside, creating a balanced and peaceful composition.Notably, the painting captures the essence of the era with a glimpse of industrial smoke trailing from one of the structures, hinting at activity within. This detail adds a dynamic element to the otherwise tranquil landscape, suggesting the coexistence of human industry and nature.Anny Dollschein’s skillful use of color and light brings this calm yet industrious village scene to life, allowing the viewer to experience a moment of history through her eyes. This piece not only highlights her mastery of watercolor but also her ability to convey deeper narratives about life and work in a bygone era.

Anny Dollschein (1893–1946) was a multifaceted Austrian artist who gained recognition as a painter, graphic artist, puppeteer, and actress. She pursued her artistic training in Graz, studying painting with Friederike Koch von Langentreu. Additionally, Dollschein attended the Landeskunstschule, where she was instructed by renowned artists Anton Marussig and Daniel Pauluzzi.

During her lifetime, Anny Dollschein engaged in various creative disciplines and did not confine herself solely to painting. Her work displayed influences from both Impressionism and Cubism, demonstrating her deep involvement with key artistic movements that shaped early twentieth-century European art.

Interest in Dollschein’s work has persisted well beyond her passing. In 2008, the Joanneum Museum in Graz showcased her art, presenting it to new audiences and reinforcing her significance in Austrian art history.

Further acknowledgment of her accomplishments took place in 2017, when a memorial plaque was unveiled in Harrachgasse, Graz, at the home where Dollschein had lived for several years. This tribute underscores her enduring bond with the city and her important role in its cultural legacy.
