Carl Olof Larsson (28 May 1853 – 22 January 1919) was a renowned Swedish painter and a leading figure in the Arts and Crafts movement. Hailing from Stockholm, Larsson overcame modest origins to emerge as one of Sweden’s most cherished artists. His artistic talent is evident across various forms, including oil paintings, watercolors, and frescoes.
Larsson gained particular acclaim for his delightful watercolors, which portray the peaceful, everyday life of his own family. Many of these works are set in his Sundborn home, capturing personal moments and embodying his appreciation for the beauty of daily domesticity. With his vibrant palette and gentle brush techniques, he played a significant role in making his art admired both in Sweden and abroad.
Besides his watercolors, Carl Larsson produced notable public art such as murals and frescoes that adorn cultural landmarks throughout Sweden. He regarded Midvinterblot (Midwinter Sacrifice) as his crowning achievement. Though initially controversial, this grand painting now occupies a distinguished position in the Swedish National Museum of Fine Arts.
