Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky (29 July 1817 – 2 May 1900) was a distinguished Russian-Armenian Romantic painter, acclaimed as one of the greatest marine artists in history. He was known for his extraordinary talent in capturing the movement and clarity of water—especially the sea—in his art.

Originally baptized as Hovhannes Aivazian, Aivazovsky was born into an Armenian family in Feodosia, a port city on the Black Sea in Crimea. The coastal surroundings profoundly shaped his passion for maritime subjects, which became the central theme throughout his artistic career.

Aivazovsky created thousands of paintings, focusing predominantly on seascapes and naval battles, which became his signature themes. His artwork is distinguished by its dramatic lighting, evocative atmospheric effects, and the powerful emotion conveyed through depictions of the ocean, making him a prominent figure in the Romantic era.

Although he traveled and exhibited widely throughout Europe and other regions, Aivazovsky maintained strong ties to Feodosia. There, he founded an art school and actively contributed to the cultural development of the city. His legacy continues today, with his paintings preserved and admired in leading museums around the world.
