More about this artwork

"Herbstlicher Baum mit San Salvatore," a captivating painting by Ernst Schiess, delicately explores the serene beauty and transient mood of autumn. The artwork features a sparse, leafy tree at its center, its branches adorned with splashes of orange and yellow leaves that suggest the changing season. This ethereal tree stands stark against a soft, muted backdrop of the San Salvatore mountain, rendered in a blend of gentle grays and blues that evoke a cool autumn sky.Dominating the foreground is a landscape marked by long shadows cast on a wide path, suggesting the low angle of the autumn sun. Flanking this path are elegant, dark cypress-like trees, stretching vertically and creating a striking contrast with the broad, textured strokes of the colorful foliage. A solitary figure in the distance adds a touch of human presence to the scene, enhancing the painting’s reflective, somewhat melancholic atmosphere.Ernst Schiess' use of expressive color and dynamic brushwork encapsulates not only the visual beauty of autumn but also its emotional resonance, making "Herbstlicher Baum mit San Salvatore" a poignant depiction of seasonal change.

Ernst Schiess (14 September 1840 – 9 September 1915) distinguished himself as a leading German engineer and businessman, whose contributions left a profound mark on the industrial sphere of his era. He was instrumental in guiding the progress of engineering and trade in Germany, particularly throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

For many years, Schiess was an active member of the Düsseldorf City Council. His expertise in engineering and keen business sense were valuable assets that spurred the city’s economic advancement and modernization. Under his guidance, cooperation between industry and local government was greatly enhanced, setting the stage for significant improvements in infrastructure and public services.

Alongside his civic duties, Schiess held the office of President of the Düsseldorf Chamber of Commerce. This role positioned him at the heart of regional economic planning, giving him a platform to represent the interests of local enterprises and to encourage Düsseldorf’s rise as a central industrial locale.

Ernst Schiess is further recognized as the founder of the German Association of Machinists (VDW). With this association, he sought to champion the cause of machinists and propel the progress of German engineering, which would later define the nation’s industrial strength. His contributions continue to be honored by the German engineering community.
