More about this artwork

"Mountain Landscape" by Ernst Schiess encapsulates the rugged beauty and serene atmosphere of a mountainous region. This evocative painting features a dynamic and textured portrayal of towering mountains that dominate the background with their dark, imposing presence. The mountain peaks are subtly highlighted, perhaps by snow or sunlight, creating a stark contrast to the deep, shadowy tones of the mountain faces. In the foreground, Schiess brings a refreshing burst of color with varying shades of green, depicting a lush assembly of trees that seem to dance under the painter's brush strokes. Each canopy is rendered with a loose and expressive style, capturing the natural and wild essence of the forest. Among these trees, patches of light and dark greens intermingle, suggesting the vibrant play of light and shadow that often animates such landscapes."Mountain Landscape" not only showcases Schiess’s skill with color and form but also his ability to convey the profound and quiet majesty of nature.

Ernst Schiess (14 September 1840 – 9 September 1915) distinguished himself as a leading German engineer and businessman, whose contributions left a profound mark on the industrial sphere of his era. He was instrumental in guiding the progress of engineering and trade in Germany, particularly throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

For many years, Schiess was an active member of the Düsseldorf City Council. His expertise in engineering and keen business sense were valuable assets that spurred the city’s economic advancement and modernization. Under his guidance, cooperation between industry and local government was greatly enhanced, setting the stage for significant improvements in infrastructure and public services.

Alongside his civic duties, Schiess held the office of President of the Düsseldorf Chamber of Commerce. This role positioned him at the heart of regional economic planning, giving him a platform to represent the interests of local enterprises and to encourage Düsseldorf’s rise as a central industrial locale.

Ernst Schiess is further recognized as the founder of the German Association of Machinists (VDW). With this association, he sought to champion the cause of machinists and propel the progress of German engineering, which would later define the nation’s industrial strength. His contributions continue to be honored by the German engineering community.
