Alexandre Yevgenievich Jacovleff (25 June 1887 – 12 May 1938) was a distinguished Russian-born painter, draughtsman, designer, and etcher associated with neoclassicism. He became known for his polished technique and meticulous attention to detail, evident in both his portraits and his representations of distant lands and peoples.
Jacovleff received his training at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, where he developed a solid background in Russian academic art traditions. His earliest creations already demonstrated a command of line and composition, traits that would define his artistic approach throughout his life.
During the 1920s, Jacovleff took part in prominent ethnographic expeditions—among them journeys to Africa and Asia organized by the French Citroën company. These travels played a significant role in shaping his work, resulting in a wealth of drawings and paintings that depicted a wide array of cultures and landscapes. His lively and perceptive portrayals earned him increased recognition within European art circles.
In addition to his painting, Jacovleff worked as a designer and etcher, and later taught as a professor at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Today, his art is still celebrated for its technical mastery and for the genuine curiosity and respect with which he approached his subjects.
