Born in Haarlem—a city with a pivotal role in the Dutch art scene of the 17th century—van Ostade trained under Frans Hals. The dynamic compositions and expressive studies of character in his works reflect the influence of his teacher.

Over the course of his lifetime, Adriaen van Ostade created an extensive body of paintings, drawings, and etchings. His art frequently showcased rustic tavern settings, peasant homes, and lively gatherings, distinguished by rich coloration and meticulous detail.
