Frits van den Berghe (3 April 1883 – 23 September 1939) was a prominent Belgian painter and illustrator, celebrated for his significant roles in both expressionism and surrealism. Born in Ghent, van den Berghe emerged as a central figure within the Flemish avant-garde movement in the early twentieth century.

His artwork is distinguished by striking color choices, strong emotional expression, and inventive themes. While his initial pieces reflected the influence of impressionism, he soon developed a more individual and expressive manner, featuring distorted shapes and vibrant, at times disconcerting, imagery.

After World War I, van den Berghe experienced a transformation in his artistic perspective, beginning to integrate surrealist features into his paintings. These later works frequently delved into the realms of fantasy and the subconscious, securing his place as one of Belgium's leading surrealist painters of his period.
