More about this artwork

This artwork by Leo Gestel beautifully captures a variety of creatures, each illustrated with detailed pencil strokes, creating a sense of liveliness and movement. The piece is arranged in a grid of five distinct panels, each dedicated to a different animal, lending a unique yet integrated feel.In the top left panel, there is a Pegasus depicted in mid-leap with its wings elegantly arched upward. This mythical creature is traditionally associated with inspiration and poetry, and its dynamic pose here suggests power and grace.Adjacent to the Pegasus, the central top panel features two horses. One seems to be nurturing the other, possibly its foal. The intimate interaction between these two horses conveys a sense of tenderness and protection. On the far right, the top row ends with a depiction of a fish surrounded by bubbles. Its fins and scales are detailed, giving texture to its form. This might symbolize freedom or movement. In the lower row, the leftmost panel shows a deer, poised as if caught in mid-jump across rocky terrain. This could symbolize agility or grace within natural settings. Finally, the last panel in the bottom right corner features a seagull in flight, its wings spread wide against the wind.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was an esteemed Dutch painter, illustrator, and visual artist, regarded as a leading figure in the emergence of Dutch modernism. Coming from an artistic background—his father served as an art school director—Gestel’s creativity was encouraged from a young age. His artistic heritage extended further, as his uncle was a painter who worked alongside the famous Vincent van Gogh, giving Gestel an early introduction to progressive artistic concepts.

Gestel’s artistic direction was profoundly influenced by his interactions with the avant-garde scene in Paris. He made frequent trips to the city, where he immersed himself in contemporary artistic movements and fell under the influence of major European trends of the early twentieth century. These experiences led him to develop a diverse artistic style, never restricting himself to a single movement or genre.

Over the course of his life, Leo Gestel explored numerous artistic approaches, working in cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. His openness to experimentation and continual innovation established him as a key player in the Dutch avant-garde, and he is often mentioned alongside Piet Mondrian as one of the principal Dutch modernists of his era.

Unfortunately, a large part of Gestel’s body of work was destroyed in a catastrophic fire, resulting in the significant loss of his creations. Nevertheless, the works that remain are admired for their originality and daring, securing his place in the history of Dutch and European art.
